The Emptea Shin is a premium bamboo whisk, meticulously handcrafted by artisans in Takayama, Japan. Made from durable Hachiku white bamboo (shirachiku), this whisk represents over 500 years of tradition and innovation in matcha preparation. Each whisk is crafted over two hours using an 8-step process, designed to enhance matcha’s texture and froth, while embodying both aesthetic beauty and functionality. The bamboo is harvested after three years, then sun-dried and aged for another two to three years before carving—a method perfected through generations. It takes 15 years of dedicated training to master the craft of chasen-making.

Unlike mass-produced whisks with quickly thinning tips that tend to curl, the Shin features gradually tapered tines that provide greater structural strength and longevity. With proper care, it can last up to 1 year with daily use—though this may vary depending on individual usage and maintenance.

Authentically crafted and shipped from Japan.

Details

Rich History: Takayama’s 500-year chasen-making tradition has introduced innovations that enhance whisking quality, matcha texture, and froth, essential for preparing matcha.
Unique Features: Features dark green thread and tapered tines.
Durability: Crafted for longevity, lasting about 6 months with daily use, and up to 18 months with careful, less frequent use. Offers superior flexibility and durability compared to bleached Madake bamboo whisks.
Precision Craftsmanship: Crafted through an 8-step process with “Ajikezuri,” shaving tines to 0.03mm, requiring high skill.

Care Instructions

To use, first soften the tines in hot water. Add matcha to your tea bowl, pour in hot water, and whisk briskly in a straight vertical back-and-forth motion. About 40 strokes should produce sufficient froth. After use, rinse with clean water and dry upright. With proper care and storage, it maintains its optimal condition for an extended period.
