Sora is an original black Raku matcha bowl created by the 8th generation of a renowned Kyoto ceramist. Raku ware, deeply associated with Sado - the Japanese tea ceremony, is unparalleled in expressing the softness of clay. Unlike mass-produced ceramics, each Sora bowl is hand-crafted individually, reminiscent of the work of traditional sword smiths. Raku ware was the first type of Japanese ceramic made specifically for matcha, embodying a deep connection with Sado.

Authentically crafted and shipped from Japan.

First batch pre-orders will begin shipping around late October.

Details

Handcrafted Design: Each bowl is uniquely shaped by hand, without the use of a potter's wheel. The artisan's skill and intuition create slight variations in every bowl.

Perfect Fit: The bowl is designed to fit comfortably in the hand with a form that slightly tapers inward.

Textured Surface: The smooth yet subtly uneven surface is finished with a glaze that gives a moderate sheen.

Matcha Enhancement: The glossy black glaze accentuates the vibrant green of matcha tea.

Soft Texture: The bowl is removed from the kiln before fully hardening, resulting in a soft, distinctive texture unique to Raku ware.

Rich History: Raku ware dates back to the late 1500s, created by the potter Chōjirō at the request of Sen no Rikyū, the influential tea master. It was the first ceramic style made specifically for the Japanese tea ceremony and matcha.

Exclusive Packaging: Designed to prevent breakage, it comes in a specially crafted package placed inside the Emptea tea chest for secure international shipping.

Care Instructions

Before use, soak the bowl in water or lukewarm water for 1-2 minutes. This helps keep the bowl clean and prevents damage by allowing the clay to absorb moisture. After that, prepare matcha two or three times to remove any earthy smell. If the smell persists, continue preparing matcha patiently as it will fade over time.

After use, thoroughly wipe off any moisture and let the bowl dry in a well-ventilated place before storing. Make sure to use it just for matcha if possible, and avoid serving or leaving acidic items (such as pickled plums or vinegared dishes) in the bowl, as they are sensitive to acids.
