Matcha Reduces Depression? Sipping Matcha for Mental Wellness

“I'm feeling a little down."Ever felt like that? You’re not alone.Today, depression affects over 264 million people globally, according to WHO. Emerging research suggests matcha as an ally against depressive symptoms. Let's uncover how it contributes to mental well-being.

Recent research led by Associate Professor Yuki Kurauchi sheds light on matcha's potential antidepressant effects. Published Feb 3, 2024, the research found a significant link between matcha and improved depressive symptoms in mice.

The research team prepared two types of mice, one with strong symptoms of depression and the other with very weak symptoms of depression. They conducted a 6-minute test to examine the state of depression by comparing the time they resisted and the time they did not move when their tails were fixed so that they were suspended.

The study found that mice showing severe signs of depression spent around 150 seconds immobile when given only water. However, when given matcha, this time decreased by about half. It seems like matcha shortened the period when the mice gave up and felt “lethargic”. Mice with mild depression spent about 50 seconds immobile with water, and giving them matcha didn't show much difference.

Research Points

  • Research found that matcha exhibited antidepressant effects only in mice with severe depressive-like symptoms.
  • Mice with severe depression have very low levels of activity in the neural circuits involved in dopamine, a neurotransmitter that affects motivation and happiness.

While more research is needed to fully understand matcha's role in managing depression, the emerging evidence is promising. By delving into the science behind matcha's antidepressant effects and exploring practical ways to incorporate it into our lives, we can empower ourselves to take proactive steps toward mental wellness.
